The Smart Home was designed by Michelle Kaufmann Designs, and showcases the best in sustainability, technology and design. Ms. Kaufmann's design, called mkSolaireTM, is a three-story, loft-style home, suitable for an urban environment. The Museum's home is the first mkSolaire to be constructed. Sustainable design is the foundation of the project requiring the use of the most current eco-friendly materials and technology. Architects and engineers agree that buildings must be able to breathe. VaproShield’s WallShield, a high performance breathable membrane that resists liquid water while minimizing the possibility of mold, mildew and rot, was the underlayment of choice for this open-joint rain screen design project. VaproShield products are environmentally sensible. Membranes are inert and can be recycled into their original bead form for reuse. VaproShield products contribute to achieving LEED points in both the Energy & Atmosphere and the Indoor Environmental Quality categories. The home is open to the public from May 2008 until January 4, 2009. Smart Home offers guests guided tours of the 2,500 square-foot home and grounds, located in a park on the east side of the Museum. |
